“… Homecoming was officially back for the first time post-lockdown, which meant that students were itching to party and the institutional response had ramped up to curtail the damage. The back-to-back party weekends could be seen as a way to remind the powers-that-be that the parties are going to happen on the students’ terms. That for every new policy, bylaw, or roadblock set up by the institutions; a response will come from the untameable partiers.
Both weekends ultimately went off as expected, with the usual collection of reckless behaviours, one serious injury, a few small crimes, and with a large police response culminating in $89,000 in tickets being handed out for alcohol related violations. The city also saw an influx of business to its fully-booked hotels and packed restaurants from the alumni there for the weekend. Despite its real risks to health, safety, and modesty; the raucous block party’s vibes have become inextricable from the allure of the homecoming story and the institutions seem used to playing their part. … ”
